Show HN: LibRapid -- A high performance multi-dimensional array library tl;dr I'm developing an incredibly fast library for arrays and mathematics, and I've implemented a few new features and made some improvements. I'd love for you to check it out! Links: GitHub: https://ift.tt/UQI6H7f Documentation: https://ift.tt/Ev1gloc Discord: https://ift.tt/OPFEnkJ Hey everyone! I am the lead developer of LibRapid (https://ift.tt/UQI6H7f), a high-performance C++ library for array manipulation and mathematics. I've been working hard to bring you some significant updates and improvements to the library, and I'm excited to share them with you! These changes will make it even easier for you to use LibRapid in your projects and enable you to do even more with it. Here's a rundown of the most notable changes: CUDA improvements: We've fixed several bugs and made performance enhancements for the CUDA implementation. Expanded support for BLAS libraries: LibRapid now has greater support for BLAS libraries, including Intel's MKL. Test suite and documentation updates: We've updated our test suite and overhauled the documentation for clarity and ease of use. Matrix Transposition: The library now supports matrix transposition with highly optimised, architecture-specific SIMD implementations and generic implementations for non-trivial types. New math utility functions: We've added various new utility functions for complex numbers, multi-precision arithmetic, and more. Matrix transposition and SIMD: LibRapid now supports matrix transposition and SIMD matrix transpose for SSE and AVX2, improving performance and memory alignment. Random number generation: We've started implementing a new random number generation library. Fast Fourier Transforms: LibRapid now supports fast Fourier transforms on 1D arrays, with more features coming soon! (We're using FFTW, so you can be sure you are getting the best possible performance) Array BLAS operations: We're implementing BLAS functions that operate on our high-level array type, allowing you to access the high-performace, specialised routines without the tedious interface. (Many operations already use BLAS functions internally) You can find more detailed information about the library and example code and usage guides in the documentation (https://ift.tt/Ev1gloc). We're always looking for feedback and contributions, so if you're interested in using LibRapid or helping out, please feel free to create a pull request or contact us via our Discord Server (https://ift.tt/OPFEnkJ). I'm putting in a lot of effort to enhance LibRapid and would greatly appreciate any sponsorships to support my work. If you or your organisation is interested in sponsoring LibRapid, please feel free to reach out to me to discuss your ideas. We hope you enjoy the latest updates to LibRapid, and look forward to seeing what you build with it! May 1, 2023 at 01:25AM

Muni Metro Fix-It Week Maintains the Subway Infrastructure

Muni Metro Fix-It Week Maintains the Subway Infrastructure
By Jessie Liang

The first Muni Metro Fix-It Week of 2023 was a resounding success in March, and it’s also the first Fix-It Week since the SFMTA launched the Central Subway in early January of this year. Here is a behind-the-scenes video recap. Fix-It Week is the SFMTA’s quarterly effort to optimize work time by closing Muni Metro early for critical maintenance. The SFMTA’s Maintenance of Way (MOW) teams did an excellent job maintaining the subway and preventing future breakdowns.

Fix-It Week helps the Muni Metro get a 20% improvement in speed and about a 20% improvement in reliability in the subway. It takes fewer minutes to take the N Judah from the Outer Sunset to Embarcadero now than it did in 2019.

From March 16 to March 22, 2023, the Muni Metro Subway between Embarcadero and West Portal closed at 9:30 p.m. to provide SFMTA maintenance crews an extended window to perform underground infrastructure improvement work that cannot be completed during the usual overnight windows. During the subway closure, buses provided substitute service for Muni Metro lines on the surface and connected all stops on Market Street.

The goal of Fix-It Week is to make Muni metro subway operations more reliable, ensure safety, and improve the customer experience. Nine MOW teams, Track, Cable Car, Motive Power, Maintenance Engineering, Mechanical Systems, Overhead Lines, Underground, Paint Shop and Signal, were involved in the maintenance work.

Major maintenance work includes:

  • Track replacement and reinstallation from the Ferry Portal to the Van Ness Crossover
  • Mechanical systems cleaning, maintenance and installation
  • Signal repairs and upgrades, including the demolition of old train control system racks, equipment and wiring
  •  Track fastener and subway lighting surveys, and drain cleaning around switches
  • Overhead Line inspections and Overhead Section Break hardware adjustments
  • Debris removal and traction power substation inspections
  • Cable Car maintenance and repairs

The SFMTA teams completed over 2,000 hours of maintenance and inspections over the seven night shutdown. They were able to perform 161 feeder operations, replace more than 125 bulbs for trackway lighting in multiple locations, renew 750 feet of Overhead Contact System contact wire, replace eight blue light phones and inspect approximately 8,000 track fastener plates from the Ferry Portal to Powell Station.

A support team was also contributed to the success of Fix-It Week. These staffers helped coordinate maintenance work, upheld all safety standards and ensured that subway service resumed on time every day.

The SFMTA will continue to keep the Muni Metro system in a state of good repair. The next Fix-It Week is scheduled for July 2023, and we thank you for your patience and understanding while we do this vital work.

SFMTA Retires the Orion, First Hybrid Bus in Cleanest Transit Fleet

SFMTA Retires the Orion, First Hybrid Bus in Cleanest Transit Fleet
By Clive Tsuma

39 Coit Muni bus stopped on the street in front of Coit Tower.

San Francisco’s first low-emissions electric hybrid Orion bus

Muni’s Orion hybrid buses are headed for retirement as we phase in a brand-new batch of El Dorado hybrid electric buses. It’s the end of an era for San Francisco’s first low-emissions electric hybrid fleet that travels the city’s toughest routes.

Orion hybrid fleet tackles Muni’s toughest routes starting in 2007

The Orion buses have been a testament to the SFMTA’s commitment to the latest green transportation technologies. Muni, which previously had relied on a diesel bus fleet in coordination with our electric trolley bus fleet, transitioned to its first 30-foot Orion diesel hybrid-electric buses in 2007. This was the start of the SFMTA’s addition of these lower emission vehicles to one of the greenest fleets in the country, ensuring better air quality city wide.

The Orions brought the agency closer to achieving its goal of an all-electric fleet and a carbon-neutral San Francisco by 2040. This is consistent with San Francisco’s Climate Action Plan to dramatically reduce harmful emissions in communities.

The Orions’ pint size made them ideal for winding routes like the 36 Teresita, which weaves through Twin Peaks, Diamond Heights, Glen Park and Bernal Heights. Many riders have taken Orions on their adventures along San Francisco’s curving streets, steep hills and tight turns. One can only imagine their sentimental value, especially among those who frequent the 36, as well as the 35 Eureka, 37 Corbett, 39 Coit and 56 Rutland routes.

The Orions were among the first low-floor hybrid buses to serve San Francisco, and the first with closed-circuit security cameras to help keep Muni riders safe. Their interior was fitted with internal destination signs to help customers know when their stop was approaching. The 30-foot coaches were designed to accommodate easier boarding and provide quieter, more efficient operation.

Their arrival offered us an opportunity to train Muni mechanics on hybrid vehicle maintenance. The agency continued to maintain the fleet even after the Orions’ assembly manufacturer went under in 2012.

The new El Dorados are primed to fill the gap left by their predecessors. Like the Orions, they are low-floor buses with a short wheelbase, making them ideal for navigating San Francisco.

As their taillights fade into the horizon, the Orion hybrid bus fleet takes a much-deserved place in the history of San Francisco transit. They conquered the winding hills of Glen Park and navigated the twisting turns of Telegraph Hill. They will be remembered as the first of Muni’s fleet to pioneer hybrid batteries, moving Muni closer to a zero emissions future.

This Week is Bike & Roll to School Week!

This Week is Bike & Roll to School Week!
By Crysta Highfield

Artwork by Ai Yamada, SFUSD student and winner of 2023 art contest, showing a girl bicycling down a road away from the viewer and featuring three cats. Additional text reads Bike & roll to School Week, San Francisco, April 24-28, 2023.

Hey. San Francisco! It's time to lace up your shoes, put on your helmets, and get ready to roll for Bike & Roll to School Week! Every year, our Safe Route to School program puts on this event to celebrate students getting around on their own power, whether by bike, wheelchair, scooter or skateboard, walking, or any other form of active transportation! This year’s celebration is April 24-28, at schools citywide.

San Francisco Safe Routes to School is a partnership of city agencies and nonprofits, led by the SFMTA, that helps make walking and bicycling to school safer and more accessible for all San Francisco children and youth and to increase the number of families who choose to walk, bicycle, take public transit, or join carpools on their way to and from school.

Bike & Roll to School Week demonstrates the joy and empowerment that comes with choosing sustainable modes of transportation and encourages students to adopt healthy habits that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. Walking, biking or rolling to school embodies the importance of being environmentally conscious and prioritizing health and well-being. And with fewer students being driven to school, pick-up and drop-off times are less congested with car traffic, and therefore safer and easier for everyone.

: Photograph of a group of students and parents on bicycles in a schoolyard enthusiastically raising their arms in the air, with one adult in the foreground taking a “selfie” photo of the group on a cell phone.

Join in on the fun! There are many ways for students, families and school staff to get involved:

See if your school is registered! Each school’s celebration is made possible by volunteer “Bike Champions” from the school community who are eager to share the joy of healthy and sustainable mobility with their students and families. San Francisco Safe Routes to School provides everything needed to make it a great event.

Pledge to bike or roll to school during the week! Everyone who pledges to participate will be entered into a drawing for great prizes, courtesy of Cleary Bikes and Mike’s Bikes.

You can even join the fun from inside your home or classroom by entering the Bike & Roll Art Contest. All SFUSD students are invited to enter the art contest, in which students at every age level can win prizes. Entries are due by May 10, 2023 and the grand prize winner will be featured on the BR2SW poster for 2024!

Show HN: Homemade rocketship treehouse – hardware to custom OS https://ift.tt/W1NzLj6

Show HN: Homemade rocketship treehouse – hardware to custom OS (This was previously submitted as https://ift.tt/5luDFh9 ) The Ravenna Ultra-Low-Altitude Vehicle is a backyard rocketship treehouse nestled in the Seattle neighborhood of Ravenna. Click the link to see a demo video ( http://rocket.jonh.net ). The hexagonal treehouse is about 6.5 feet (2 meters) across at its widest point. The frame is welded mild steel with riveted aluminum siding. It contains nearly 800 LEDs forming dozens of numeric displays spread across 14 control panels, each with an acrylic face laser-cut and etched with labels such as "Lunar Distance" and "Hydraulic Pressure". The pilot controls the rocket using a joystick and panels full of working switches, knobs and buttons. Underneath the capsule are three "thrusters" that shoot plumes of water and compressed air under the control of the pilot's joystick, simulating real positioning thrusters. Takeoff and docking sequences are augmented by a paint-shaker that simulates the vibration of a rocket engine. Sound effects complete the illusion, with a powered subwoofer that gives the rocket a satisfying rumble. When it was built in 2011, rocket operations were controlled by three Atmega328 microprocessors on custom-fabricated printed circuit boards, running a small operating system, RULOS, built just for this project. A trench running from the house to the rocket carries 12VDC power for the lighting and electronics, water for the thrusters, compressed air, and several data signals. Since 2011, the two-person team has upgraded it, here is a recent update from the makers: One of the most visible changes is replacing the primary 4-line display with a slicker 6-line display (i.e., 6 rows of 8 columns of 7-segment LEDs). The audio synthesizer has been upgraded to a PCB that can generate 50khz, 16-bit audio. The interconnection bus, which had been flat IDC cable carrying individual on/off lines, was upgraded to a true I2C-based networked distributed system with over a dozen individually addressable targets, all interconnected by standard cat5 cable that carries both our I2C protocol and power. We also moved much of the electronics from 8-bit atmega328s to newer, 32-bit STM32F3's. RULOS has been expanded into a pretty general purpose embedded systems platform ported to 5 major lines of CPU (atmega, attiny, stm32, nxp lpc, and esp32). We've used it for dozens of other projects in the last 12 years, including a nanosecond-accurate timestamper, a GPS datalogger, an air quality sensor, various little electronic control boards for toys (e.g. these, and this), and an autonomous boat (that sank). It is all available on Github: https://ift.tt/1tRPJWc . http://rocket.jonh.net April 24, 2023 at 11:11PM

Show HN: GPT powered prompt-to-storyboard with Coqui voices, StabilityAI images https://ift.tt/5etlwZk

Show HN: GPT powered prompt-to-storyboard with Coqui voices, StabilityAI images I had 2 weeks off from work and wanted a pet project before heading back. With GPT and Generative AI in the news, I decided to chain multiple Al products together to build something really cool. I set my end goal to be: prompt-to-storyboard (aka fun videos generated purely via generative AI). There exists some prompt-to-video products, but I wanted to tell stories with audio as well. The end product takes an initial prompt and produces a series of images and audio files, which I then combine (with subtitles) into the final video. To showcase videos, there is a basic upvote/downvote leaderboard. Text | OpenAI https://openai.com/ Text is generated in a few high-level steps that I ask GPT to work through. These are all based on the initial user prompt, as such (ideally) indirectly controlled by the user. - Create a concept for a movie scene based on the prompt, including the theme and setting - Define each character in the scene - Define how each character looks - Define how each character sounds - Define 'frames' of the storyboard All of this textual information is defined in a JSON object I describe to GPT. I then take GPT's output and build the storyboard with the tools below. Voices | Coqui https://coqui.ai/ From the GPT output, I needed three major pieces of information to build voices in a way that I found satisfying: - Description of the voice - Description of the performance - Text of the actual dialog spoken Coqui has a product called 'prompt-to-voice', where you can describe how a character will sound and a custom voice is made for that character - this is how GPT defines the characters to use in the storyboard. As such, every voice is unique per storyboard. GPT will decide that a certain character is an "older man with a raspy voice", and I'll ask Coqui for that type of voice. In addition to this, in order to describe the performance, GPT outputs a basic emotion to summarize the line of dialog (happy, sad, angry, etc) - this is also sent to Coqui per audio clip generated. Images | Stability AI https://stability.ai/ While I originally setup the storyboard generator to use DALL-E due to already integrating with OpenAl for GPI, I found the cost prohibitive. As such, the images generated for the storyboards are from Stability Al's Stable Diffusion (stable-diffusion-512-v2-1). I combine the description of the frame that GPT provides, in addition to the theme and setting that GPT output for the whole storyboard, to generate each frame. Since GPT controls the data sent to Stable Diffusion with the description of the frame as well as the theme and setting, if your prompt dictates a theme it should hopefully translate into a theme in your storyboard. Both the storyboard and the 'prompt enhanced' image generation in the 'Create Content' tab pre-feed a GPT request with a summary of Stability Al's prompt guide. It will try and pick keyword weights to improve the image, and much like the setting and theme, keywords should be influenced by the initial prompt provided to the product. Conclusion Have fun and make my 2 weeks of work seem worth it! Voting on storyboards and creating storyboards both require a simple Google login to get access. https://meyer.id April 21, 2023 at 05:35AM

Muni Improvements Draw Increased Ridership

Muni Improvements Draw Increased Ridership
By Kate McCarthy

Buses driving towards downtown on Geary Boulevard.

38 Geary buses zip downtown on new transit lanes that improve travel times for Muni riders.

As Earth Day approaches and we think about how to encourage more people to take non-car trips, recent Muni improvement projects are drawing increased ridership across the city. While Muni ridership downtown has not yet rebounded to pre-pandemic levels, ridership has gone up on Muni lines where we have improved speed and frequency of Muni service.

Muni is a lifeline for many of our riders: 70% of Muni riders have an annual income of less than $50,000. As we restored and added Muni service after the start of the pandemic, we invested in the routes that serve people who rely on transit and need it most. For example, after we installed transit lanes, increased frequency and re-routed the 22 Fillmore to bring people to their jobs and medical appointments in Mission Bay, ridership increased to 107% of pre-pandemic levels on weekdays and 118% on weekends.

Since the start of the pandemic, we’ve implemented more than 21 miles of new transit priority lanes, growing our transit lane network (https://ift.tt/7oc6MX3) to over 70 miles. These transit lanes are improving travel times for Muni riders across the city. After transit lanes were installed on Mission Street in downtown, travel times on the 14 Mission and 14R Mission Rapid are now 31% quicker.

Ridership numbers on the 49 Van Ness-Mission also blossomed to 109% of pre-pandemic ridership on weekdays and 114% on weekends after construction on the Van Ness BRT corridor was completed last April. With physically-separated transit lanes and transit signal priority that gives the green light to Muni and Golden Gate Transit buses, riders there are seeing travel times reduced by 35%.

A similar story has emerged on San Francisco’s busiest transit boulevard — Geary. Like other lines that serve downtown, the 38 Geary hasn’t fully recovered to pre-pandemic ridership levels. But the route did nab a spot in the top 10 highest recovered routes in the Muni system. The 38 Geary’s 36,000 daily riders have recently seen travel time savings of up to 18% since we installed three miles of new transit lanes, bus stop changes and other improvements as part of the Geary Rapid Project. We plan similar improvements on the western end of the corridor as part of the Geary Boulevard Improvement Project.

Muni riders have noticed that improvements to our busiest Muni lines are making service faster and more reliable than it has been in decades. Two-thirds (66%) of Muni riders who took our Annual Muni Rider Survey last fall rated Muni service as “good” or “excellent” — a 9% increase from 2021 and the strongest increase since 2018.

These improvements can’t come soon enough. Most of San Francisco’s greenhouse gas emissions come from cars and trucks. As the urgency to address climate change mounts, so does the need to get the most out of our Muni system. To inspire riders to come back to Muni, we’re working hard to bring back the Muni system our city deserves: One that is thriving with the better frequency, improved reliability and better connections that these projects are delivering.

Show HN: Database for analyzing US companies, visualize using Apache SuperSet https://ift.tt/D2XveCn

Show HN: Database for analyzing US companies, visualize using Apache SuperSet My main motivation was that I wanted to be able to drill down and filter across all the available stocks, look at the data for myself, and narrow down on the stocks I am interested based on my own sets of criteria, and make data-driven analysis for my personal investment strategies. I used PostgreSQL as the backend database for ELT data pipelines, and used Citus Data cstore_fdw for columnar compression for the final dataset. All financial data is coming from SEC Edgar, https://ift.tt/o7IH2Ja . I used Python for downloading most of the data. I also run the data load development locally on my home Ubuntu server that I built 5 years ago. I bought 4TB of M2 disks for best database performance, with PRIME B360M-A motherboard and Intel Chip Coffee Lake S. I built the website simply using WordPress, and I run Apache Superset using gunicorn via Apache Webserver reverse proxy. The registration form I had to build myself with PHP and some JavaScript, because it needed to automatically create a SuperSet user upon registration. Otherwise, I would need to input everyone manually. I used Python again for the data integration. Please don't use the database directly as an investment tool, as its in Beta, and the data still needs to undergo heavy data quality checks, please confirm all the numbers yourself, as I provide a link for every company to the SEC filings. https://ift.tt/DSf2ikK April 19, 2023 at 02:46AM

There’s a Community Shuttle Coming to the Bayview

There’s a Community Shuttle Coming to the Bayview
By

Several individuals with masks huddle for a group photo in front of a colorful mural backdrop in an our setting.

A new shuttle to serve Bayview’s diverse communities

A new community shuttle is coming to Bayview-Hunters Point in January of 2024, and we need your help designing it! The SFMTA is partnering with the California Air Resources Board and nine community-based organizations to launch a dynamic service community shuttle that truly meets your needs. A community shuttle has been a long-desired service for this geographically isolated community, and was identified as a top priority in the Bayview Community Based Transportation Plan. This program builds off of previous community shuttle efforts like the Bayview Moves program. To share your voice, take our survey now or attend one of our upcoming community partner events.

A “dynamic service” shuttle is one that doesn’t have a fixed route like a bus line, but instead operates in a “service area.” The shuttle will pick up and drop off riders anywhere within the Bayview area and connect them to hard-to-reach destinations like community centers, regional transit and grocery stores. Combined with Muni service, this program will help Bayview-Hunters Point residents get around more easily while reducing car trips and improving air quality.

A Community Shuttle only works if it is accessible, feels welcoming and gets people where they need to go. That’s why the SFMTA will be working with residents through the summer and fall of 2023 to build a service plan that works for the community.

This is where you come in. We want to know how you might use a shuttle like this. Would you use it during commute hours or on nights and weekends? Would you ride within your immediate neighborhood or to destinations like the 24th Street BART station and SF General Hospital? How long would you wait for a shuttle to arrive? Would you walk to the corner or a block away for a pickup? Answers to these questions will help us build a shuttle that meets your needs.

We want to establish shuttle service that effectively serves the people living in Bayview-Hunters Point today, and the more feedback we get, the better. You can get involved in the following ways:

This program also includes job training, a Community Congress that will provide project oversight, and a Third Street storefront for transit information and services. You can find more information on our Fact Sheet.

Show HN: TYON, a Simple JSON Alternative https://ift.tt/ec4zxDW

Show HN: TYON, a Simple JSON Alternative TYON (typed object notation) is my attempt to address the main frustrations I have with JSON. 1. Key repetition - you can specify the key names once at the start of a list or map, instead of on each object separately. 2. Escaping strings - everything in a string is literal except for " which is escaped as "". This makes writing regexes and multiline text easier without introducing a bunch of different string styles or excess escaping, which I am not a fan of. 3. While not nearly as important as the first two to me, I did reduce symbol clutter when possible. Files are implicitly maps, keys don't require quotes in most cases, and you don't need commas between items. 4. Decoupling syntax and data formats - TYON has recommended formats for interoperability, but none of these are part of the core spec, so tools are equally welcome to just treat everything as a string. The linked repo contains the spec and a cli app that provides formatting, validation, and conversion to JSON. https://ift.tt/rlMvYX8 April 15, 2023 at 03:10AM

Show HN: I’m building an autonomous business run by ChatGPT https://ift.tt/m82lJbH

Show HN: I’m building an autonomous business run by ChatGPT Hey HN!! I just shipped a project called Airfeed: https://airfeed.co/ Here's how it works: 1. You tell it the research topics you're interested in following This can be anything -- LLMs, chatbots, image generation, scaling model inference, small language models, datasets, etc. 2. Every morning, it filters new AI research papers for quality work that is relevant to your configured topics, and sends you an email summary. Here's a sample email: https://ift.tt/mI8nKcS --- As a fun experiment, I've made everything completely autonomous: Every morning, ChatGPT takes care of filtering/processing all research papers & writing each email. --- Why I built this: I think there needs to be a better way for engineers, researchers, and AI product builders to stay up to date on the latest AI research that's relevant to whatever they're working on. For someone building LLMs, this could mean keeping up with research papers covering multiple topics, ex: scaling attention, model architecture, new datasets, new fine-tuning techniques, etc. --- How this is different from other newsletters: This isn't a generic AI newsletter. It's research-focused & personalized, since it only highlights the papers that might be relevant to you (based on your specific topics). I found this to be useful, since a lot of papers are irrelevant and/or low quality. --- When building maroofy.com [1], I would regularly read the latest research papers on everything related to: contrastive learning, vector embeddings, music classification, etc. So, I thought it would be nice to build something that filters/summarizes just the new research papers covering topics I care about, and sends me the top ones in a daily, morning email. Would love any feedback!! :D [1] https://ift.tt/GWkZQar https://airfeed.co/ April 13, 2023 at 03:22AM

Show HN: GPT–LLM native macOS app with time travel, versioning, search https://ift.tt/yl7kquR

Show HN: GPT–LLM native macOS app with time travel, versioning, search Hey everyone! I made a Mac app for exploring large language models. It’s fast, small, has a tiny memory footprint. It’s immutable by design with both immediate time travel and automatic versioning as foundational elements. The app is written in Swift and a bit of Rust for the tokenizer. I used SwiftUI for structure and animations and Cocoa for advanced behavior. All storage is SQLite and local-only. You can go through the database as needed and backup it as well. The app has support for variants, which is the `n` parameter in the OpenAI chat completion API—equivalent to the drafts feature in Bard. It shows model- and ChatML-aware tokens and cost, and it dynamically adjusts response length in function of prompt length and context length. It supports hiding runs that are not useful, marking the ones that are notable, and going through the ancestry of the current run. It also has support for examples, as specified in ChatML, conversation names and personal and local-only notes. The full-text search works across all stored text and it has support for `all`, `any`, `prefix` and `phrase` matching; the results are time-ordered rather than ranked for the time being. There are several shortcuts and more are coming so that the app can be used entirely by keyboard. You can export to JSON and all data is exported. The app is sandboxed and notarized. The API keys are stored securely in the Keychain. Next I plan to implement combinatorial runs (mixing multiple values of the same parameter and multiple models as well) and full Markdown support. Currently only OpenAI’s conversational models are supported (GPT 3.5, GPT 4 8K, GPT 4 32K), but I’ll be adding support for local models and custom ChatML endpoints as soon as possible. Give it a try. Any and all feedback welcome! Thoughts and questions as well! William https://thellm.app April 11, 2023 at 11:34PM

10 Reasons to Love San Francisco Parking Control Officers

10 Reasons to Love San Francisco Parking Control Officers
By Andrea Buffa

Two Parking Control Officers side by side smiling in an office setting and while sitting in a parking enforcement vehicle.

SMILE, ready for our close ups! To learn more about the day in the life of a hard working Parking Control Officer (PCO), take a look here.

It isn't easy being a parking control officer (PCO) in San Francisco. None of us likes to get a parking ticket, and we sometimes wrongly take out our frustrations on the PCOs who are simply doing their job to keep San Francisco moving.

To help you avoid veering off into negativity during your next encounter with an SFMTA Parking Control Officer, we’re providing you with this list of reasons you should actually love PCOs. Keep your favorite reason in mind next time you see a PCO on the street. Instead of getting angry with them, you might even consider appreciating them for dedicating themselves to this tough job rain or shine.

Top 10 reasons to love San Francisco Parking Control Officers:

  1. They keep the intersections in the Financial District clear — and pedestrians safe — when commuters are desperately trying to get to the Bay Bridge at the end of the workday.

  1. They respond to your complaints when someone’s car is blocking your driveway or there’s a vehicle that’s been parked on your street for so long that it might be abandoned.

  1. They make sure disabled parking spots are available for people with disabilities — and aren’t being taken up by people who shouldn’t be using those spots.

  1. They direct traffic during major sports events, including the Warriors and Giants games, so fans can get to the game on time.

  1. They also direct traffic during major events like the Pride parade. On those days, they sometimes work 12-hour shifts to make sure the show goes on.

  1. They respond in moments of crisis – like during the pandemic when they helped direct traffic in and out of COVID-19 testing and vaccination centers.

  1. They make sure San Francisco firefighters can get to the fire hydrant when there’s a fire, which means making sure cars aren’t blocking the hydrant.

  1. They support citywide efforts like the Healthy Streets Operation Center so city workers involved in addressing homelessness and unhealthy street behavior can do their jobs safely.

  1. They stop people from double parking in the middle of the street, especially on retail corridors, which slows down Muni, creates traffic and can endanger pedestrians and people who bike, scoot, use a wheelchair or skateboard.

  1. They’re happy to give you directions if you need them.

There are many other things PCOs do to keep San Franciscans and city visitors safe and able to move around the city. So, let’s celebrate them instead of hating on them! And don’t forget, taking out your anger workers who provide you with a service is not okay. Ever. If you get a ticket you disagree with, contest the citation: Contest a Citation | SFMTA
